IRONCAD is already the leading 3D CAD solution in packaging in various materials such as wood and plywood, with for example world-leading NEFAB as a customer. Now IRONCAD also offers a complete solution for companies that need to create boxes and customised corrugated cardboard interiors to keep goods protected and in place.
Doing so requires more than the functions often available for bending and spreading sheet metal. These are of course also available in IRONCAD already. Corrugated board has completely different properties that require custom functions to work properly. Folding and material handling look completely different from sheet metal. That is why IRONCAD is now presenting a really long-awaited innovation, the combination of user-friendliness and construction in corrugated board.
Designing packaging is based on what is being shipped. It can be anything from car doors, machine parts, different components in different types of materials. These can be imported into IRONCAD's 3D environment and serve as a basis for the design of packaging. IRONCAD supports many formats and can even handle 1000s of parts in one file, which makes it easier to manage.
The designer drags in the desired type of box (by default) from the side of the screen and specifies the type of corrugated board and thickness from a list. Then the dimensions of the box can be adjusted by the user simply pulling the handle, the whole solution adapts instantly. The product(s) to be transported are placed in the box and completed with surrounding special corrugated cardboard parts, which are also available in catalogues with quick drag & drop technology.
The fact that there are ready-made parts of the most common shapes already created in catalogues is a fantastic time-saver. These various types of spacers, holders and covers, like the cartons, are incredibly easy to adjust with handles, pull a handle and snap to the inside of the carton or enter dimensions from the part. Done!
When a corrugated solution is ready in IRONCAD , the user can expand it with a mouse click. This will create a flat "spread" version showing how the corrugated board should be cut. In addition, lines are displayed telling where the paper should be bent or cut. All this is ready to be sent to production.
