Hexagon Metrology develops measuring instruments and related fixtures and tools. The design department previously used a combination of AutoCAD and SolidWorks and had accumulated large volumes of 2D data over the years.
Hexagon was dissatisfied with its previous CAD solution and sought better performance and flexibility for the development of its instruments. In traditional 3D systems, each component is a separate file, so large designs require a file archive containing thousands of files that grows alongside the design—a time-consuming process that is prone to errors. In addition, the new solution had to be able to handle the large volume of legacy 2D data.
When Hexagon’s engineers evaluated IRONCAD they saw that the requirements for performance, flexibility, and collaboration could be met. The innovative approach frees them from constraints and parametric relationships: they decide for themselves when and if to use design intent, which results in a much faster workflow when the design needs to be modified. Multiple components and assemblies can be contained in a single file, and parts are scaled and positioned with high precision relative to one another so that everything fits immediately. Catalogs are shared across the corporate network via drag-and-drop. IRONCAD DRAFT , with a powerful DWG editor similar to AutoCAD, made the transition from AutoCAD a natural choice.
We have switched from both AutoCAD and SolidWorks to using only IRONCAD. Our experience has shown us that we can design faster and more easily than with our previous solutions, since we don’t have to deal with parametric relationships and constraints. With IRONCAD , we can design an entire project in a single file, and we make extensive use of the libraries.
