B1001 log band saw - Constructed in IRONCAD

The B1001 is an impressive band sawmill from Logosol. The model is both developed and manufactured in Sweden and has a groundbreaking design. The sawmill can handle logs up to 1001 mm in diameter. The unique adjustment of the saw head makes it easy to cut boards of the desired dimensions with full precision.

Streamlining engineering work with woodworking machine design

Already in 2005, Logosol decided to start using IRONCAD because it wanted a more efficient tool for design and to do it on its own, instead of hiring consultants. After an evaluation of different 3D CAD solutions on the market, with the requirement to be able to produce all new designs and drawings for their woodworking machines and other products faster and more efficiently, the choice fell on IRONCAD.

It was and still is the only 3D CAD solution on the market that supports the free creation of concepts in 3D without having to use locked relationships between all parts. This turned out to be very important, as IRONCAD provided a combination of flexibility, precision, appropriate user features in a user-friendly and intuitive 3D CAD system with a competitive price. Other goals with this investment were better optimized design solutions, utilizing suppliers' 3D files, ensuring correct documentation for subcontractors of e.g. cut sheet metal by exporting 3D and 2D documentation, being able to create clear spare parts documentation and better visualization for marketing.

The PLM solution DDM is used to manage versions and documentation.

As the demand for Logosol's products continues to grow, the company has also had to increase the pace of product development. It was therefore decided to increase the number of employees in the design department with more engineers and to start using the PLM solution. DDM. This also allowed more people outside the design department, such as the purchasing department, to have access to the drawings. This in turn made the handling of ordering and assembly of prototypes smoother and less time consuming.

DDM can handle virtually all file types in Windows and is used together with IRONCAD. It is also possible to have different types of documents linked to CAD files. All documents and CAD files associated with the project can be organized in a clear structure and provide an overview of the status of different parts, such as "prototype", "under development", "released" or "expired", etc. Even who has done what with a file is logged. DDM makes it possible to easily keep track of 3D files, drawings, emails and Office documents. When more people in the company now have access to CAD files and related documents, everyone saves time and more people feel included in what is happening.

"We sketch in IRONCAD instead of using pen and paper - and it's really fast!"

Erik Svensson works as a product developer at Logosol and we asked him what he thinks about IRONCAD.

"We see clear advantages of working in IRONCAD compared to traditional 3D CAD systems, which some of us have used elsewhere before. We often make "sketches" and concepts in IRONCAD, instead of using pen and paper, because it is so fast! There is a significant difference between product development compared to documenting a finished solution. Documenting an existing solution is something any system can do, but to develop new solutions effectively requires flexibility. With IRONCAD we can use the concept model all the way to the finished product, we don't have to "redraw" it because the CAD system wants us to do it a certain way. This is an invaluable advantage of IRONCAD!" says Erik.

He continues:

"Another clear advantage of IRONCAD is the TriBall tool, which is very powerful and makes other 3D CAD systems feel somewhat clumsy to work with. The workflow is slightly different compared to traditional constraints-based 3D CAD systems, but it doesn't take many days to get up and running and really benefit from the drag-and-drop method and the fantastic TriBall tool.

We also feel that DDM, the PLM solution we use, is easy to access and has made it easier for us to keep files and projects organized. There are many useful functions, which means that DDM solves our needs in a good way." Erik concludes.
