Managing external links in IRONCAD is an effective way to optimize the performance and file structure of your CAD projects. By linking out parts and assemblies to separate files, you can reduce the file size of your master scene (ICS) and improve workflow.

What are external links?

External links mean that you save out parts or assemblies as separate files (ICS) and link them to your main scene. Instead of having all components embedded in a single file, the main scene references these external files. This means that IRONCAD only needs to load the relevant files when needed, improving performance and manageability.

How to link out files?

  1. Save as external file: Select the part or assembly you want to link out. Go to the menu and select "Save As Assembly". In the dialog box that opens, make sure that the option "Link to current scene" is unchecked (Under Menu) if you do not want to create a linked copy. Save the file in the desired location.
  2. Insert as external link: To insert an external linked file into your main scene, go to the menu and select "Insert Assembly". Navigate to the saved file and select it. IRONCAD will now link to this file instead of embedding it.

When to use external links?

Using external links is particularly beneficial when:

  • You work with large assemblies and want to improve performance.
  • You need to break down projects into smaller, manageable parts.
  • You want to reuse components in multiple projects without duplicating data.

Key tips

  • Keep the file structure in order. Make sure that all external files are correctly linked and that paths are updated to avoid broken links.
  • Use 'Save As' to create new versions of a part or compilation. If you want to create a new version without affecting the original, use 'Save As' and rename the file. This creates a separate file that can be linked in without affecting the original file.
