The camera is very easy to use as only the scroll wheel on the mouse is required to rotate.

By also combining this with various keyboard shortcuts, you get full control over where you are in the 3D scene, relative to the model which is always stuck in its place in the coordinate system.

Rotate with the center button combined with;

  • [Shift] pressed - panning the camera.
  • [Ctrl] pressed - zooms steplessly with the camera. (These two can also switch places via Options, Interaction, Mouse.)

Hold down the center button and combine with:

  • [Ctrl] and [Shift] to move the center of rotation of a geometry to the center of the screen.

Functions Orbit function used with the left mouse button to rotate the camera can be combined with [Alt] and [Shift].

  • Rotate with [Alt] pressed - Locks the camera rotation about the X, Y or Z axis of the 3D scene, regardless of how the geometry is oriented on the screen. Comparable to rotating about the "floor", also known as Rotate about Scene Floor.
  • Rotate with [Shift] pressed - Locks the camera rotation horizontally or vertically on the screen, regardless of how the camera or geometry is oriented. Actually only useful when the model is displayed horizontally/vertically on the screen.

In addition, there are a bunch of other keyboard shortcuts to position the camera on preset exit points.

  • [D] = Reset the camera, same as double clicking with the scroll wheel.
  • [I] = Isometric view according to Top-Front-Right.
  • [F] = Front direction from the front, [T] = Top, [R] = Right, [L] = Left, [B] = Bottom.

One feature that is not mentioned in the movie, but is super handy in many situations is Look at.

  • [W] = Look at function, left click on a surface to look at it perpendicularly or use the arrow keys to rotate the camera 90°.

Here you can read about more different preset and very useful keyboard shortcuts available in IRONCAD.
